Message from Dr. Pournelle

Dr. Pournelle asked to have this posted:

Monday Dec. 25, I had a stroke.   I think my head is all right, and I am recovering.  Alas I used to be a touch typist and I am now learning to be a two finger typist.  At present I am a one finger typist.  Call it 1.1 finger, but after today’s therapy , maybe 1.2; I am learning. I just made the Spock sign.

Started a ramble to post, but it is easy with Windows 8 to have what you write vanish.  I will keep trying.

Please someone post in my blog that I am here and learning.  The Surface works but learning to use it and Outlook 13
after a stroke is hard enough and I am clumsy. But I am trying and think I will recover. But it takes time.

But I am coming back.

Dr. Pournelle, it is indeed good to hear that you already bouncing back. I’ve had a few family members that have had strokes. What I’ve learned from them is daily perseverance is key, like coming back from any illness or injury. I know that you can do this, your mention of typing 1.1 is a good indicator. I echo the others: Dr. Pournelle’s one finger is better than ten from most other people. BTW, you looked good in the photo.

  3. Doug Lewis says:

No excuses! You owe us a Janissaries, sequel to “Hammer” and if you could get Larry to squeeze in another Motie Saga I would be grateful. Seriously, it’s great news you are doing better. Prayers for your continued recovery and for your family.

  4. Bill Seward says:

Dr. Pournelle, please accept my best belated “Merry Christmas!” as well as wishes for a prosperous and healthy (especially healthy) New Year.

My mother had a stroke, so I have so idea of what you’re going through now. This is the critical time for you. Work harder than you have ever worked on your recovery, and your efforts will be rewarded.

We look forward to whatever you can send us when you can send it, touch typed, 2 fingered, one fingered or dictated to a scribe. Get well soon!

Sounds like some very good results are being made. If anyone can shake off a stroke, I expect you to be the one. Good luck, live long and prosper!

  8. I suspect that Jerry Pournelle with a stroke still makes more sense than most of Washington in the whole of its health.

In an ever-changing world and Internet, your website and columns have been an anchor to many users for the past 30+ years. I am looking forward to hearing you again on This Week in Technology, and I still re-read “King David’s Spaceship” (among others) from time to time.

With modern treatment and therapy, a complete recovery is possible. It happened to one of my friends, and a few months later he was completely back to normal. Hang in there, Jerry. Things will get better.

Dec 25 fell on a Thursday this year.

    Hoping for a full recovery!

Typing this on a Surface Pro 3 that I got for Christmas and I’m still trying to figure out the mess that is Windows 8.1 !
