SHORT STORIES BY A MASTER OF SCIENCE FICTION! Includes over a dozen stories by SF legend Jerry Pournelle, and remembrances by Pournelle collaborators and admirers.

For the better part of five decades, Jerry Pournelle’s name has been synonymous with hard-hitting science fiction. His Falkenberg’s Legion stories and Janissaries series helped define the military sf genre, as did his work as editor on the There Will Be War series of anthologies. With frequent collaborator Larry Niven, he co-wrote the genre-defining first contact novel The Mote in God’s Eye, which was praised by Robert A. Heinlein as “possibly the greatest science fiction novel I have ever read.”

Now, for the first time, all of Pournelle’s best short work has been collected in a single volume. Herein you will find over a dozen short stories, each with a new introduction by editor and longtime Pournelle assistant John F. Carr, as well as essays and remembrances by Pournelle collaborators and admirers.

At the publisher’s request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

THE FINAL NOVEL BY LEGENDARY AUTHOR JERRY POURNELLE, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR DAVID WEBER AND AUTHOR’S SON PHILLIP POURNELLE

NO REST FOR THE WEARY

Rick Galloway’s still not sure what inspired him to volunteer to fight Cubans in Angola, and he certainly never expected to end his African adventure shanghaied by a flying saucer when his CIA superiors cut him and his men adrift as the Cubans overran their final position.

He didn’t expect to end up on the planet Tran, God only knew how many light-years from Earth, raising drugs for an alien cartel under the auspices—more or less—of a galactic civilization administered and run by a slave class of humans for their alien masters, either.

But he did. And since then, he’s survived mutinies, civil wars, battles against Byzantine “Romans,” medieval knights, and Mongol raiders on a world where catastrophic “climate change” races unchecked through a 600-year cycle. Along the way he’s found love, lost it, found it again, and become a great noble . . . all the while knowing his alien “employers” will probably nuke his people back into the Stone Age when they’re done.

He’s managed his impossible balancing act for 13 years. He’s lost people he cared about, been forced to do things he’s hated, and tried along the way to make life better for the people trapped on Tran with him, and he’s tired. So tired.

But now, everything has changed . . . again. New Starmen have arrived on Tran, with dangerous gifts and star weapons of their own. Everything Rick Galloway thought he knew about his mission on Tran is about to be turned on its head.

And everyone expects him to fix it.

This is great news! I’ve been a fan since “Sword and Sceptre” in Analog in 1973. We all miss his insight and story telling so much.

By the way, just FYI, I have just now updated Jerry’s Wikipedia bio to include details of the publication of Mamelukes.

  4. Michael L Clark says:

So happy that this is finally coming out! I read Dr. Pournelle’s works of both fiction and non-fiction for years — re-reading his novels over and over. Though I never met him, I corresponded with him a few times via email over the years, and felt like he was part of my own life. His death was quite a blow to me, and made me feel quite melancholy whenever I thought of it. I have pre-ordered this book, and look forward to June when it arrive!

  5. Peter Casier says:

‘t was 1983. I was a printing engineer, and in my first job, was injected into a small start-up company in Belgium, filled with nerds, designing digital imaging software. I had no IT background, working as a graphical specialist amongst people who called themselves the “bit screwers”: hard core hardware and software engineers trying to optimize every bit and every computing cycle they could. A new world to me, filled with PDP11’s and home-made Z80 and 6502-based processing units. The monthly highlight in our nerdy existence, was when “Byte” Magazine was delivered and we would fight to get the latest edition, once it came in. One of my favorite columns was Jerry’s “Chaos Manor” column in “Byte”, reviewing the latest releases of micro computing gimmicks, and his fight with home-brew data conversion stuff having one micro computing unit to to the next. Jerry’s satirical views, and “just-do-it-yourself” approach inspired me to self-learn how to program at the most native lowest level: assembler language, learning to “screw the bits” myself. Via many iterations in the IT world, I was able to bring the “Jerry Pournelle’s” approach to the United Nations, designing a global email system which worked in the most isolated places on earth, with the worst possible connectivity. Jerry continued to be an inspiration: “If it does not exist, design it yourself”. Little did I know that many years later, Jerry would quote one of my own writings in his blog. RIP Jerry. Mine is one more life you touched and changed forever.

I’ve spent days immersed in the worlds that Jerry / Niven created. Happy days they were.

I look forward to again living those halcyon days on the patio with a good book and a pipe.

  10. Ed Brault says:

At long last. My original copies have been getting threadbare from re-reading. Just put it on pre-order with Amazon. I WILL live to see it delivered!

  11. Marc Hess says:

Grateful to see this. I never met Jerry in person, but his writings and wit through many years made him a friend who gave me much great advice. He is missed.

  15. Frankns says:

Congrats on both publications. “Best of” will turn out to be an early Christmas present and “Mameluks” will arrive in time for a birthday. Great to see the family round out Larry’s work this way. I’m still missing him. He was truly a treasure.

  16. Dave says:

I agree with the previous comments. It has been a long time waiting for this book to come out.

  17. Rose M Krueger says:

    yay! I hoped for this.

  18. Robert Arrington says:

Mamelukes is a book I’ve been waiting to read for 32 years. I am excited to learn that the story will continue on. I was not quite 29 years old when I found Janissaries on display at the local B. Dalton. The stories of Tran have been re-read for most of my adult life.

And now I will have another one.

  19. Brian Novak says:

Since ’80, first Jannissaires and ’85, Footfall (Hamner) (with Niven), when asked about my favorite SF authors, It was JERRY / Niven et al. ( and his Blessed blog). Since then, waiting for sequels, it’s nice to know we are almost there for more story line on Tran. Still wondering if Footfall would be done well, if interpreted by the modern movie creators of 2020? I read there was some possibility. Usually different from the book & our interpretation & imagination, always better than the usual Hollywood spin. Maybe someone could get it done accurately, it sometimes happens. I hope we will see that show someday. Brian, mid-VanIsle BC

  20. Peter Macuga says:

Mamelukes at last!!!! Please continue the series as a memorial to Dr Pournelle. Keep publishing!
