CHAOS MANOR

PAYING FOR THIS PLACE

Monday, July 28, 2008

Both sites, www.jerrypournelle.com and Chaos Manor Reviews  are operated on the "public radio" model: they stay open if enough subscribe. So far there have been enough, and Thanks! But: it is a LOT of work, and it is getting to the point when I will need more subscribers so that I can pay one of the Associates to do some of the work. That has become particularly true now that we have two sites to maintain.

A subscription to either site is a subscription to both, and gets the password to all closed areas.

The simple way to subscribe is to click here:

That will take you to Paypal and set you up for a Patron subscription.

You can also subscribe through Paypal, pay with any credit card by using Roberta's secure connection, or simply send a check or money order through the mail. Paypal also accepts credit cards directly.

Patron Subscribers get access to all areas, and a free pdf copy of The Strategy of Technology mailed when I enroll you.

There is also the PLATINUM Subscription. This is $100 (One Hundred) Dollars a year. Platinum subscribers will get some benefits not available to others, but the primary purpose is not benefits. The real point is its effect on my work. I will also do special mailings to Platinum Subscribers at more frequent intervals than for other classes. My goal is 1000 Platinum subscribers: the end result is independence from publishers: I get to write what I think should be written, and if a major publisher isn't interested and won't pay an advance, I will still be able to do that work.

Projects include: a book about the health situation and surviving cancer treatment; a book on my political principles (which probably are of interest to some thousands of people but hardly likely to become best sellers); and other such items of special interest to the people who visit this site.

Platinum subscriptions also allow me to work harder on the Mail. I consider my Mail section about as good as any mail feature on the Internet. I select the letters, and either reply or group them so that there are alternative views.

For Platinum Subscription, click below.

You can also subscribe through Paypal, pay with any credit card by using Roberta's secure connection, or simply send a check or money order through the mail.

Legal Announcement: Anything you send here is a donation, and all you get for it is gratitude. That is: I do my best, but there's only me doing it, and I am not under the illusion that I am invulnerable. I do send mailings to subscribers, with virus warnings and good news and such like, but I do that when I can, and I don't assume any obligation.

Renewal: we suggest annual renewals. I may remove you from the subscription list at some time after two years, but long before that I will bug you with gentle but increasingly more frequent nags. That will be the only kind of solicitation you will ever get. I NEVER sell, give, or loan my subscription list to ANYONE.

Whatever means you use to pay, please send me an email saying so, and if the subscription email address is different from the return address on the email, please give that. Put the word "Subscribe" in the heading. I try to enroll subscriptions promptly, but sometimes I get as much as a week or two behind. Eventually I get them all.

You can pay by PAYPAL. You can do that by signing up for it, or simply by using the Paypal Buttons you see in VIEW and MAIL. We have never had a bad experience with Paypal. It is simple and convenient, and Paypal notifies me automatically, so you need do nothing more.

The easiest way is here:

If you don't subscribe to Paypal, you can sign up. When you sign up through me I get a bonus. Meanwhile, Paypal does have a means for transfer of money to my account whether you subscribe to Paypal or not. If that interests you, click here. We highly recommend PAYPAL. I have been using it for years now without problems. The link above is for a patron subscription. You can simply use Paypal to send a smaller amount to me jerryp@jerrypournelle.com, and say in the Paypal message box what it is for. Be sure to include the subscriber name and email address. I note that some subscribers have been giving subscriptions as gifts, which is a great way to bring in new subscribers. Thanks!

NOTE THAT THE BUTTON is for a patron subscription. You can simply go to Paypal and subscribe for less. Just say in the Paypal message what the payment is for, and be sure to give your subscription email address.

IF YOU WANT TO SEND BY CREDIT CARD, send me an email saying SUBSCRIBED RJP, then CLICK HERE. That will take you to Roberta's secure payments page system, where you should be able to subscribe by credit card. It doesn't say so on her page, but MASTER CARD is acceptable. The "kind of card" box is ignored: if you put the proper card number in, Mastercard works.  DISCOVER is NOT accepted, alas. There is a built in "handling" charge due to the time it will take Roberta to process credit card subscriptions.  Please do not forget to send me an email with your name and your email subscription address.

You may subscribe as "regular" or "patron". I don't know what extra you will get as a "patron", but from time to time there is something. Mostly "patron" is a larger donation, but from time to time I send out reports and pictures and virus warnings. As to what your money goes for, it keeps this place open. When you have sent money,  send me YOUR NAME and YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS and the fact that y0u sent a subscription through Roberta's credit card, and put the word RJsubscribe in the subject of that email. You can add anything else you like to that message: I read those.

Subscribers now get to see the weekly column immediately after it is written.

For the moment, everyone else gets to see it then too. That may change in future. Any content in the password protected area of Chaos Manor Reviews will be available to subscribers.

I also send Chaos Manor Warnings to subscribers from time to time as I think they are needed.  Subscribers get reports with pictures, sometimes exclusive, more often merely earlier, but sometimes a lot earlier. Other stuff as I develop it; frankly that depends on how many subscriptions I get, and how much time I have. Subscriptions give me more time to muck about, of course. (Or will if I ever get caught up on book contracts... just at the moment, Mamelukes, the next book in the Janissaries series is eating all my time now that Inferno 2 is done.)

Byte Magazine no longer publishes my column. I will continue the column, publishing it in Chaos Manor Reviews as I did in the months when BYTE didn't exist. That is, I will if I have enough subscriptions to make that worth while.

Now that BYTE is not paying me for the columns, this becomes more important. I continue to write for Nikkei Business Publications, and other overseas publishers.

PAYPAL has taken much of the pressure off. The pay per click scheme seems not to have caught on. Electronic payment like PAYPAL has. But I do wish there were a simple way to get PAY PER CLICK.

Wells Fargo electronic payments work. So do most "checkfree" payment systems.

Keeping this place up costs mostly time, but there are some real expenses involved too. So: if you want to help out here, send twenty bucks ($20) for a regular subscription or thirty-six ($36) for Patron,  cash, check, or money order to:

Dr. Jerry E. Pournelle
Chaos Manor / PMB 70
4804 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Valley Village, CA 91607

Please do be sure to include your EMAIL ADDRESS, preferably on the check itself.

The Post Office discourages sending cash through the mail, but it's legal, and we have never had a problem. Do wrap cash in some kind of letter so it's not obvious: temptation is sinful or unethical or both.

After you sent the money, SEND ME YOUR Subscriber NAME and Subscriber EMAIL ADDRESS BY EMAIL. The subject should be "I PAID"  or "RJsubscribe" (if you used RJP's credit card acceptance page) and you should describe the payment method in the email. It is better if the email "I Paid" comes with the return address you want me to use on the mailing list!! However, if the subscription address is different from the return address on the email notifying me, please be sure to specify the subscription address.

If you want to contribute for STRATEGY OF TECHNOLOGY when subscribing you can include extra money. A buck or so is fine. IF YOU WANT A PDF FORMAT copy of Strategy of Technology:

Strategy of Technology in pdf format:

"Patron subscribers" send $36. The pdf of Strategy of Technology is free to subscribers. If you request a pdf format copy of Strategy of Technology, request that with your Patron Subscription: I'll send the pdf when I enter your enrollment. I have no idea what other extra values patron subscribers will be given, but I have some in mind. I will think of something. They certainly get my thanks, and the more there are the more incentive I have to make things happen and keep this place going. I appreciate the large number of patron subscribers I have even after the dot.bust. I very much appreciate the renewals.

Understand> I am not after eating or rent money. I'd rather have you as a reader than starving. Subscriptions are more than welcome -- I can't keep this going without them -- but I don't want to be the reason for divorces or hardship...

The only thing I promise for any money you send is that I'll record your email address (BE SURE to include it), and if this thing actually goes anywhere, you'll get first notice and whatever else I think electronically appropriate. Subscribers will get passwords to any closed areas on all the web sites including Chaos Manor Reviews.

I said I would keep this experiment going through "next December". That was almost ten years ago. I'll keep it going until December 2008 at least (health permitting). All money sent becomes the property of J.E. Pournelle and Associates, none will be returned, and we promise nothing in return beyond continuation of this web page with reasonable updates at least weekly and daily when possible. It appears that something may come of this, astonishingly; and it is an interesting way to keep score. Meanwhile, we are looking for a source of revenue that doesn't drive you batty with banner ads. You will note there are NO BANNER ADS. There are unobtrusive Google Ads in Chaos Manor Reviews. They don't bring in enough revenue to continue if they are a problem, but so far they don't seem to have annoyed anyone enough to cause mail about them.

I sometimes send mailings to the subscriber list. How useful they are is up to the subscriber. I send them from time to time. Lately they have mostly been virus and worm warnings, and many subscribers think they have been timely and useful. I also send notices of special events and stuff.

NOTE:  Paypal knows me as jerryp@jerrypournelle.com and there is never a problem sending money there. I use the address JerryEP@jerrypournelle.com for some purposes, and Paypal knows that one as well.

Dear Jerry Pournelle,

Thank you for joining PayPal! To express our appreciation, we will add $5 to your account for everyone you refer to PayPal.

Just forward the email below to all your friends and family. When they click on the link to sign up, you'll get $5 as soon as they verify their account!

****************************************************************

Did you know you can email money with PayPal?

PayPal, a free service of X.com, lets users send and receive money online. Use PayPal.com to split restaurant tabs, collect club dues, pay friends for movie tickets, or buy a baseball card at an online auction. PayPal charges the money to your credit card or bank account. It's faster, safer and easier than mailing a check.

As soon as you sign up and verify your bank account, PayPal will automatically add $5 to your balance!

We're confident you'll want to use PayPal, but if not, you can transfer the money to your bank account at any time. No strings attached. Click on this link to sign up and see for yourself:

[For reasons I do not understand there is some hoohaw about security certificates, but the link does take you to Paypal and lets you sign up. I think Paypal changed something since the last time I looked into this and I probably need to do an update, but I am assured that all is well and you really do get to the Paypal site. JEP]

After signing up, you'll get an email like this to send to your friends and family. PayPal will give you $5 for each friend you refer. It's that easy!
